BACS have recently completed the relocation of their live services operation thanks to TPN. TPN provided the programme management for the relocation, along with other project management, including that of the testing and commissioning activities.
Paying tribute to the Programme, Gordon Younger, Chief Executive of BACS said: -
"This is a significant achievement. The programme was completed more than three months ahead of schedule and well under the allocated budget. This is testament to the professionalism and dedication of the multi-disciplinary team that came together to achieve a key corporate goal."
Programme facts :
Approximately 5000 man-days went into making sure that the migration was a success.
An entire new Operations site was built. The build included wiring, generators, chillers, uninterrupted power supply(UPS), lighting, security access, building management system (BMS).
Systems, network and management infrastructures were installed to mirror the previous site. Extensive testing was completed to ensure that there was no disruption to services at changeover.
Derek Barnby (BACS Operations Director) says:
“A tremendous effort was put in by all to ensure that everything went smoothly. I am indebted to the TPN / BACS team who worked long and hard to get us to the point where commissioning was completed with total success.”
BACSTEL-IP – based on internet protocols, using PKI technology for maximum security – is a completely new access system for users of the UK’s payment services. Businesses benefit from facilities such as monitoring the status of their payments, being able to view a wider range of reports electronically and maintaining their own records – all online. In mid-2002, TPN‘s David Boast was engaged to take responsibility for delivery of the infrastructure supporting the new application, separately developed by one of the UK’s ‘big five’ consultancies.
The challenge involved:
- implementation of a completely new enterprise-wide infrastructure across two data centres
- working with new cutting-edge technologies, including the first large-scale implementation of Oracle’s clustering technology (RAC) in the UK
- managing a number of key business partners including Sun, Oracle, BEA, Cisco re-planning the project to meet aggressive and business-critical deadlines
- managing effective knowledge transfer to operational staff
The project was delivered on schedule – to the day – and 15% below the budget agreed prior to TPN engagement.
TPN took responsibility for the project management of a time-critical project to speed the transfer of customer accounts between retail banks. Working closely with the Marketing and Business Teams at BACS for over nine months, liaising with technical teams from all of the major clearing banks, and managing resources from a third-party systems house, the project implemented on time - to the day - and within budget.
"The TPN team has been working with BACS since early 1998. Since then they've helped us deliver a number of key internal and customer facing projects. These projects have benefited BACS and helped us to enhance our service to the UK banking industry and its customers.
Their most recent work has been to deliver a critical project to help automate the transfer of Direct Debits and Standing Orders for customers changing bank accounts. This high profile project has created cost and efficiency benefits for BACS, our Members and their customers.
TPN has consistently shown their ability to deliver critical projects on-time, to budget and to quality - we value that ability and look forward to continuing our partnership with them."
